I. Collection Policy: purpose and scope
The Spartan Virtual Library Collection Development (SVLCD) policy is based upon our mission statement:
Our mission is to help facilitate and bring to fruition our users’ creative idea by giving access to information and resources.
The scope of the Spartan Virtual Library collection will include:
The Spartan Virtual Library will listen to users - Spartan Middle School students, staff, and community members (RUSA, 4.0) - in an attempt to understand their needs and desires for this library through surveys, online reference services, chat, emails and texts (RUSA, 3.7).
Based on these bounds, we will develop the virtual library collection (RUSA, 3.6) in order to support our users as they gain an understanding and appreciation for varied perspectives, gain skills in communication and ultimately work toward becoming intrinsically motivated learners.
II. Ownership and Access to Resources
II. Cooperation
By sharing resources, the Spartan Virtual Library encourages a cooperative approach (RUSA, 4.5) to collection development. No one library can provide all the needed resources for its users and we are fortunate to share resources with other libraries. Through our virtual library, users have access to not only our library catalog, but to our city library catalog and the larger WRLS system. Further, as residents of Wisconsin, we have access to BadgerLink, Wisconsin’s online library which provides access to licensed content such as magazines, newspapers, scholarly articles, videos, images, and music. Through our cooperative agreements, the Sparta Virtual Library is able to support user needs.
IV. Criteria for Selection
The following basic principles are used as guidelines for selection:
V. Collection Evaluation/Weeding
Just as we do with our physical collection, the library staff will maintain the virtual library to keep resources accurate, up-to-date,
attractive and relevant. Bi-yearly evaluation of the virtual library collection is essential to ensure that it reflects the current needs and interests of our users.
